Ulam Spiral – Minimal is a subtle black-on-white print that transforms a core idea from number theory into compelling visual form.

Every number from 1 to 251,001 spirals outward from the center of a 501 × 501 grid, with 22,115 primes (about 8.81% of the grid) uniquely revealed amid the flow. Observable features such as 2,594 twin-prime pairs and the largest prime gap of 86 highlight the balance of structure and surprise encoded within the primes.

The Ulam spiral was introduced by visionary mathematician Stanislaw Ulam, who, by sketching numbers in a spiral, revealed prime clustering and patterning not easily seen in lists. His explorations bridged gaps between computation, visualization, and deep mathematical questions, illustrating the power of seeing the familiar in new ways.

Visualising primes this way unlocks a “map” of the periodic table of numbers—where randomness and rhythm intertwine, and even dense patterns emerge from apparent disorder. Every segment of this grid hints at deeper regularities, revealing relationships among primes that challenge intuition and inspire curiosity.

This edition is produced as an open, museum-grade print on 250gsm archival matte paper. The paper ensures each black mark is rendered with clarity, subtlety, and detail worthy of both mathematics and design, making it ideal for collectors, educators, or anyone drawn to the beauty of numbers.

Signature Series

The Signature series forms the core of Atomic Printworks — a series of mathematical visualisations and scientific infographics that reveal the structures underlying our world.

From geometry and number theory to astronomy, geology, and evolutionary biology, each design transforms data and theory into elegant visual form.

These works celebrate the shared language of science and design: clarity, proportion, and order made visible.

Printing & Materials

Our Signature series is produced in collaboration with specialist fine-art printing partners using museum-grade 250 gsm archival giclée paper.

Each print is made to order with exceptional precision and colour accuracy, using pigment-based inks for long-term stability and rich tonal depth.

Prints are carefully rolled in acid-free tissue and shipped in rigid cardboard tubes to ensure they arrive in perfect condition, ready for framing.

All materials and processes are chosen for their longevity, texture, and fidelity to the original artwork, reflecting our commitment to quality and craft.
