Landslide Deposits within Candor Chasma, part of the Radiance series, captures the dramatic terrain inside one of the largest canyons of the Valles Marineris system. This image, taken by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 21 May 2010, reveals massive deposits left by ancient landslides cascading down the steep canyon walls. Candor Chasma, stretching over 770 kilometres, showcases towering escarpments, tectonic fractures, and multi-layered rock formations shaped by complex interactions of tectonic activity, water, and gravity.

Candor Chasma is scientifically notable for its varied geology and the evidence it preserves of Mars’ dynamic past. The canyon’s structure, divided into East and West sections, likely formed through extensive tectonic stretching and possibly the collapse of subsurface material due to water or ice activity. The region has revealed minerals like hydrated sulfates and iron oxides, indicators of past interactions with water. Layers exposed by erosion and landslides provide a record of ancient environmental changes, and the dramatic deposits—formed by the movement of immense blocks down the canyon slopes—offer insight into the scale of Martian geological processes.

The print was created from high-fidelity raw sensor data sourced directly from the HiRISE mission archive. The image has been carefully processed for clarity and depth, emphasising both scientific fidelity and artistic detail in the landscape.

Launched in 2006, HiRISE—the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment—remains the most powerful camera ever sent to Mars, collecting images with resolutions finer than a metre per pixel. Its observations have transformed the study of Martian surface, enabling the identification of geological features, the exploration of potential landing sites, and public access to the wonders of Mars.

This open edition print is produced using the giclée process on premium 250gsm archival matte paper, ensuring longevity, rich detail, and a subtle textured finish. The result is a visually striking, scientifically precise representation of one of Mars’s most spectacular canyon systems.

Printing & Materials

Our Radiance series is produced in collaboration with specialist fine-art printing partners using museum-grade 250 gsm archival giclée paper.

Each print is made to order with exceptional precision and colour accuracy, using pigment-based inks for long-term stability and rich tonal depth.

Prints are carefully rolled in acid-free tissue and shipped in rigid cardboard tubes to ensure they arrive in perfect condition, ready for framing.
