Sapho Longwing
The Sapho Longwing (Heliconius sapho) is the subject of this clean, large-format illustration, with bold simplicity bringing out the deep indigo-black forewings and elegant white bands. Native to rainforests and subtropical woodlands from Mexico through Central America to north-western South America, this butterfly is renowned for its understated graphic beauty and unique lifestyle.
The sapho longwing is most commonly found gliding in forest canopy gaps and along stream edges, where adults may cluster to roost together in the evening. With a wingspan of around eight centimetres, the species stands out for both its calm flight and long-lived adults — in some cases surviving up to six months by supplementing a nectar diet with protein-rich pollen. Males are territorial, occupying preferred perches and waiting for receptive females. Sapho longwing caterpillars feed on passion vines, and communal larval feeding leads to striking clusters of bright yellow caterpillars. Like other heliconian butterflies, this species emits a sweet scent from glandular pores on the abdomen, a trait that further deters predators.
Printed from an updated illustration originally developed for the book Bugs, this plate is presented with generous margins on 250gsm archival matte paper using the giclée process. The result is a refined, impactful print: clean, bold, and scientifically grounded, designed to elevate the striking presence and visual harmony of Heliconius sapho in any space.
Bugs Series
Bugs gathers illustrations adapted from and inspired by founder Simon Tyler's book Bugs, published by Pavilion Children’s Books in 2017. The series celebrates the graphic elegance of insect life: armour-like exoskeletons, iridescent wings, compound eyes, and the ingenious mechanics of movement and camouflage. It’s a visual field guide reimagined—clean, bold forms and carefully tuned palettes that bring structure to the surface.
Each piece begins with the research-led drawings from the book and then goes further: refined linework, rebalanced composition, and subtle textural detailing designed for generous print sizes. The aim is clarity and presence — images that feel scientifically grounded yet striking on the wall. Printed with the same archival care as our other series, Bugs turns natural history into crisp, enduring graphic art.
